Our client initially invested a large amount of money for an investment opportunity around a year before the scam. For unforeseen reasons, the investment was cancelled and our client’s funds were returned to them.

Around a year later, they received an email from what our client believed to be from the initial legitimate company. They offered a new investment opportunity to our client and claimed it was all safe and legitimate.

As our client believed it to be from the legitimate company, they invested the full amount and proceeded with the investment.

The email was different

After our client hadn’t heard back in a while, they emailed the company, using the initial email they had for them. This email bounced back undelivered, as the DNS for the email address no longer exists. After checking the email correspondence, our client realised the two emails differed and the investment was made to an unknown party.

Unfortunately, the client realised they had been the victim of fraud and contacted Refundee to help them recover this.

We helped our client gather all the evidence they needed and provided a bespoke report to the bank, showing why our client should be reimbursed.

The bank initially rejected the complaint, which we then escalated to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS). The FOS agreed that the bank was at fault, and our client was reimbursed the full £200,000 they lost.
