£30,000 recovered for job/task victim
Published September 2, 2026
Our client was looking for work and was contacted by a “recruiter” offering paid work on commission. They told our client they found their CV on Indeed and wanted to hire them to complete tasks, such as reviewing hotels for companies.
The job was described as flexible, easy, and with the opportunity to earn a substantial amount of money. Once our client agreed, they were directed to a platform where they were advised to complete tasks and pay in cryptocurrency to unlock higher commissions.
Our client was persuaded that once they completed all the tasks, they would receive their commission, which was a large amount. The deposits to unlock higher commissions continued to increase, and when our client completed the tasks, they were asked to pay withdrawal fees in order to release the commission.
The commission was never received
Once our client paid the withdrawal fees, the money was never released, and the scammers continued to ask for further fees until our client realised they had unfortunately fallen victim to a job/task scam.
They thought their money was gone for good, blamed themselves, and didn’t know what to do. That was until they found Refundee. We provided clear guidance and support to the client, conducting a thorough review and creating a bespoke report to recover their funds.
The initial complaint was rejected by their bank; however, we utilised our experience to escalate this to the Financial Ombudsman Service and successfully argued that the client should be reimbursed.
The Financial Ombudsman agreed and stated that the bank should have done more to prevent the scam. Our client was reimbursed for part of their loss and was able to recover £30,000 that they thought they would never see again.
A 'recruiter' claiming to have found our client's CV on Indeed offered paid hotel-review tasks that needed crypto deposits to unlock commission. After the bank rejected the claim, the Financial Ombudsman agreed the bank should have done more and £30,000 was recovered.
