£120,000 recovered for victim of fake investment scheme
Published September 2, 2026
Our client saw an advertisement on Instagram for an investment company called Vaquita Capital.
The fraudsters built up an online presence, conducted a number of seminars, and even held an in-person event to demonstrate credibility and increase the number of investors in the scheme. They spoke at length with a ‘financial advisor’ who showed a professional portal displaying impressive returns from trading in CFDs, Forex, and stock indices.
Our client was persuaded to invest a smaller amount initially, which appeared to increase in value through the fake portal. They were then persuaded to invest more deposits and even received monthly returns on their investments.
Unfortunately, when the scheme stopped attracting new investors, the returns also ceased, and the scheme collapsed, leaving investors seeking answers about what to do next.
Until they found Refundee…
We spoke with our client and numerous other investors to investigate and assess whether recovery was possible under UK banking regulations.
Our thorough investigation proved that the investors should be reimbursed under UK banking regulations and that the banks are liable to compensate victims for their losses.
The banks fought against this; however, we were able to provide clear evidence to the Financial Ombudsman Service explaining why investors should be reimbursed.
Our client, along with many others, was able to recover the full amount they lost and get their life back on track.
Vaquita Capital ran seminars, an in-person event and a professional portal showing returns from CFDs, forex and stock indices. When new investors dried up, the scheme collapsed. We proved to the Financial Ombudsman that the banks were liable and our client recovered the full £120,000.
